Why a Famous Laboratory Does Not Imply a Shared Secret
Large national laboratories and aerospace organisations employ people across hundreds of different occupations. Scientists working on classified defence projects may work at the same institution as software developers, administrative assistants, accountants, safety officers, machinists, facilities engineers, medical staff and contractors.
Consequently, stating that two people were “connected to Los Alamos” or “worked at JPL” does not establish that they:
- worked together;
- belonged to the same division;
- had access to the same information;
- held equivalent security clearances;
- even worked during the same period.

This is an important evidential boundary because conspiracy narratives often compress very different employment histories into a single implied network.
How Famous Institutions Shaped the Rumour
The institutions most frequently mentioned in online discussions possess unusually strong symbolic value.

- university fusion laboratories;
- defence contractors.
These names immediately evoke classified technology, nuclear weapons, advanced propulsion or space research. Once several cases become associated with recognisable institutions, the institutions themselves begin functioning as the apparent evidence.
In practice, however, the reasoning often proceeds backwards:
- A laboratory has secret programmes.
- Someone once worked there.
- Therefore that individual probably possessed knowledge of those programmes.
That conclusion does not follow automatically. Major research centres simultaneously conduct unclassified science, engineering support, public research, education, maintenance and administration alongside classified work. Employment at the institution alone does not identify which part of that organisation someone belonged to.
Why Job Role and Security Clearance Matter
The difference between institutional affiliation and actual programme access becomes even more significant when considering security classifications.
Within large government laboratories:
- access is compartmentalised;
- clearances differ widely;
- information is shared strictly on a need-to-know basis;
- many employees never work on classified programmes.
Two individuals can both truthfully be described as laboratory employees while having completely unrelated responsibilities.
This distinction became particularly important as online discussions increasingly portrayed all people on circulating “lab lists” as having equivalent access to sensitive aerospace or UFO-related information.
In reality, establishing such a claim would require evidence including:
- documented programme assignments;
- overlapping projects;
- shared reporting structures;
- common classified responsibilities;
- verified access to the same restricted information.
Simply identifying a prestigious employer does not provide that evidence.
The 20,000-Worker Scale Problem
Another weakness in treating institutional affiliation as proof of connection is simple organisational scale.
National laboratories and major aerospace centres employ thousands—and in some cases tens of thousands—of people across multiple campuses, contractors and partner organisations.
At that scale:
- unrelated deaths will inevitably occur;
- retirements constantly change the workforce;
- contractors move between institutions;
- employees often have decades-long careers spanning multiple employers.
If a list is assembled by searching for anyone who once worked at a famous laboratory over several years, statistical coincidence becomes increasingly likely.
This is why investigators typically seek much narrower forms of linkage than shared employment. They look for common communications, overlapping investigations, financial connections, travel records, operational relationships or identifiable threats rather than relying on institutional names alone.
Why CBS Treated the Lab Connection Carefully
CBS’s reporting reflected this distinction throughout its coverage.
On one hand, the network reported that federal authorities were examining whether any connection existed among the cases. On the other hand, it also reported that people familiar with the separate investigations did not identify obvious links and warned against assuming that employment at prominent laboratories automatically implied participation in one hidden project. That framing differs substantially from many online presentations, which often present laboratory affiliation itself as the principal evidence for a coordinated campaign.
What the Loose Affiliation Problem Means for UFO and Antigravity Claims
Within the broader discussion of alleged deaths connected to UFO or antigravity research, the loose affiliation problem highlights an important evidential standard.
To support claims that individuals were targeted because of secret work, evidence would ideally demonstrate:
- involvement in the same programme;
- overlapping classified responsibilities;
- documented interactions;
- common investigative interest;
- or another independently verifiable operational connection.
Institutional affiliation alone establishes only that people passed through the same large organisation at some point. It does not demonstrate shared research, shared knowledge or shared exposure to whatever risk is being proposed.
For that reason, the presence of famous laboratory names on a list should be viewed as a starting point for investigation rather than evidence that the listed individuals formed a coherent group connected through secret UFO, antigravity or advanced aerospace projects.
